Description
MORNING AT BONAVENTURE
Bonaventure Cemetery is one the most famous and beautiful cemeteries in the United States. Magnificent live oak trees draped in Spanish Moss, the morning sunlight sending rays of light through the branches...it all took my breath away.
Bonaventure Cemetery and the famous "Bird Girl" statue was also featured on the cover of the New York Times bestselling book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". The novel and the film immortalized Savannah and it's many colorful characters including the popular drag performer Lady Chablis and singer songwriter Johnny Mercer.
Johnny Mercer is one of the many notables buried at Bonaventure Cemetery. He wrote some of the most famous songs of the era including "Come Rain or Come Shine", "Moon River", "Days of Wine and Roses", "Summer Wind", "That Old Black Magic", and many others. Google his bio...you won't regret it.
If you're ever in Savannah, Bonaventure Cemetery is a must-see. Just don't go looking for the "Bird Girl" statue...she had to be moved to a museum due to vandalism and people chipping off pieces of it to take home. Bonaventure Cemetery is an amazingly beautiful place and definitely worth your time.
