Description
BONAVENTURE GRACIE
One of the most visited gravesites in Bonaventure Cemetery is the grave of little Gracie Watkins. Gracie was born in 1883 to the Watson family who were originally from Boston. Her father, W.J. Watson managed the Pulaski Hotel and little Gracie would entertain the guests there and by dancing and singing songs in the lobby. Little Gracie became ill with pneumonia and tragically died in 1889 leaving her family and Savannah heartbroken. Her father commissioned the statue of her based on a photo which was taken shortly before her death.
What makes this story even sadder is that the Watson family eventually moved back to New England and never came back leaving Gracie all alone at Bonaventure Cemetery. People leave gifts, toys, and other condolences at her grave as a way of paying tribute to this little girl who touched so many people.
