Artist's Description
THE LAST WARRIOR
A Man O' War washes ashore just before dawn on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Despite their painful sting there is no denying they are beautiful creatures.
Interesting fact: Men O' War aren't actually jellyfish or even a single organism. A Man O' War is a siphonophore which is a colony of organisms working together. They have no means of propulsion and drift with the currents and catch the wind with their pneumatophores. The pneumatophore is the purple "balloon" that floats on the top of the water. The tentacles of the Man O' War can extend up to 165 feet below the surface of the water although the average length is between 30 and 50 feet.
About Mark Andrew Thomas
My name is Mark Andrew Thomas and I'm a photographer and filmmaker currently residing in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I grew up in Florida right next to the Everglades and although I photograph a wide variety of subjects and locations, the Florida Everglades will always be my first love. In my career I've had the honor of working with the NatGeoWild Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Science Network, ABC HD, and other worldwide media outlets. I hope you'll find something here that speaks to you and brings you joy, rekindles your sense of wonder, or brings back a great memory of a place you've been to. Thank you for visiting! ~ Mark Andrew Thomas
