PRIMEVAL
Hey...did this picture just move??? A 13 foot American Alligator lurks in the waters of the Florida Everglades at dusk. I've often been asked why I photograph alligators so much. The answer is simple. When I look into the eyes of an alligator I feel the pulse of the planet. I feel the rhythm of life as it's been for millions of years and I'm transported back to a time when dinosaurs ruled the earth. They are survivors and to me...endlessly fascinating.
The American Alligator is the apex predator of the Florida Everglades and males can reach a length of 14 feet. Although fearsome in appearance, alligators seldom attack or bother with humans being naturally afraid of people.
This behavior can change, however, when they are fed which is against the law in the state of Florida. An alligator that's been fed can lose their fear of humans and become dangerous and unpredictable and labeled a nuisance alligator. Unfortunately, this means the alligator is destroyed through no fault of their own. Alligators are not as dangerous as most people think, but they are wild animals and can be unpredictable so using extreme caution is best.
Photographed using an external flash.
