Artist's Description

EVERGLADES GATORLAND RUINS

Off of a stretch of U.S. Highway 27 in Florida there sits the ruins of a once popular tourist attraction near South Bay, FL. Everglades Gatorland opened in 1959 and featured a gas station, food, a gift shop, and of course live alligators and other wildlife. Tourists used to come by the busload to this roadside attraction which remained popular through the 1970's until the theme parks gradually took away the business and U.S. Highway 27 became more of a roadway for locals rather than tourists.

UPDATE: Everglades Gatorland was eventually demolished in 2021/2022 and the land it once stood on is now being developed.

About Mark Andrew Thomas

Mark Andrew Thomas

My name is Mark Andrew Thomas and I'm a photographer and filmmaker currently residing in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I grew up in Florida right next to the Everglades and although I photograph a wide variety of subjects and locations, the Florida Everglades will always be my first love. In my career I've had the honor of working with the NatGeoWild Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Science Network, ABC HD, and other worldwide media outlets. I hope you'll find something here that speaks to you and brings you joy, rekindles your sense of wonder, or brings back a great memory of a place you've been to. Thank you for visiting! ~ Mark Andrew Thomas
