Description
THE TREASURE COAST OF FLORIDA
An aerial view of Hutchinson island Beach along the Treasure Coast of Florida. The Treasure Coast is located along Florida’s Atlantic coast and consists of the Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin counties. The history of the Treasure Coast dates back to 1700's when a fleet of 11 Spanish ships wrecked off the coast. Since then, several other shipwrecks have occurred off the Florida coast over the last 400 years. The most well known of these shipwrecks is the Urca De Lima which sank during a hurricane in 1715 and started the treasure-hunting craze in the 1970s.
So is there actual treasure on the Treasure Coast? Yes! Quite a bit of it too. Plenty of treasure is still out there and occasionally washes ashore or is found with metal detectors. In 2020 a man found $6,000 worth of silver coins along Wabasso Beach. Not bad for a walk along the beach!
