Description
THE NEW FORT LAUDERDALE
The beautiful skyline of Downtown Fort Lauderdale glitters under the night sky with the popular 15th Street Fisheries restaurant next to the intracoastal waterway in the foreground. The skyline of Fort Lauderdale has changed quite a bit even in just the the last five years. New high rise apartment buildings, condos, and office buildings are sprouting up every few months as developers try to keep up with the ever expanding population. Property values are also skyrocketing as a result.
It's easy to see why people want to move here, Fort Lauderdale is a unique and exciting city with an amazing nightlife scene that rivals many larger cities. On any given night you can stroll down the upscale Las Olas Boulevard and browse the many shops and boutiques. While there you can also visit an art gallery or two and then relax at one of the many bistros, cafes, and coffee shops along the drive. Head to the Arts & Entertainment district to see live theater at the Broward Center for Performing Arts and then walk along the New River and watch the boats and yachts go by. Fort Lauderdale was also one of the first cities in the country to feature an IMAX theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science which is right next to the performing arts center. The Museum of Discovery and Science also features traveling exhibits and educational activities for kids and adults alike.
Fort Lauderdale is also considered the yachting capital of the world by the boating industry and with its many canals and waterways has earned the nickname The Venice of America. Multimillion dollar homes line the waterways of the city each with their yachts docked out in back. Many people don't even drive to the restaurants and instead opt to travel by boat or water taxi and then enjoy dining along the water. The 15th Street Fisheries shown in the photo is a perfect example of this.
Fort Lauderdale is also host to the annual Winterfest Boat Parade which features hundreds of yachts and boats decorated with lights and Christmas decorations that make their way up the intracoastal and then back again. Each year features a celebrity grand marshal and many homes along the intracoastal throw extravagant boat parade parties on the night of the parade as they watch the boats go by.
This Florida native can tell you that if you haven't yet visited Fort Lauderdale then you're definitely in for a treat. A word of caution though, Fort Lauderdale is also one of the Spring Break capitals of the world in fact it was the ORIGINAL Spring Break destination. Unless you're a college student you might want to opt for another time of year to visit. October through February are the best times to come if you want to avoid crowds and also experience the best weather.
