Description
STRANAHAN HOUSE IN FORT LAUDERDALE
One of the most historical landmarks in Fort Lauderdale is the Stranahan House on the New River. Originally the home of Frank and Ivy Stranahan, this house still stands amid modern high rises and new development in the city. The house was built in 1901 with the lower floor serving as a trading post and the upper floor was a community hall. In 1926 the Florida land boom collapsed and after that and the devastating effects of two hurricanes, Frank drowned himself in the New River right in front of his house.
The Historical Society of Fort Lauderdale purchased the house in 1979 and since then it has been open to the public and is a great place to visit to experience a piece of the history of Fort Lauderdale.
