Description
SHONDA'S SOUVENIRS ABANDONED ROADSIDE SHOP
An abandoned roadside souvenir shop with a giant pineapple sign is one of several abandoned structures you'll find driving up U.S. 27 in Florida. This souvenir shop in Lake Placid, FL was called Shonda's Souvenirs and was in business from 1952 until the early 2000's when it was closed and later abandoned.
Driving U.S. 27 in Florida is like taking a trip back through time. Before Florida's Turnpike was fully completed in 1964, U.S. 27 was the main highway people used when traveling to and from Central Florida. Many roadside tourist attractions, restaurants, and souvenir shops sprouted up to take advantage of the traffic and lure in tourists. Once Florida's Turnpike opened, U.S. 27 became much less traveled causing many of these roadside businesses to fold and go out of business. The final straw for the surviving ones, especially the attractions, was when the theme parks started taking over Orlando. Currently the only remaining attraction still open along U.S. 27 is Gatorama located in Palmdale, FL. There are still a couple of retro diners and restaurants open but those are few and far between. Make sure to check out my "Life After People" collection for more images of other abandoned buildings. This image was the result of several different exposures using a flashlight to light paint each section of the structure.
